Train Derailment north of Pleasantville
At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2026, approximately 25 cars of a 57 total car westbound BNSF Railroad train derailed near the rail crossing at Geneva Dr, north of Pleasantville. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the derailment is being investigated by the BNSF Railroad. The train contents contained no hazardous materials. Geneva Drive between Hwy 5 and 40th Avenue will be closed to through traffic for the immediate future. Numerous pieces of heavy equipment have been brought in to clear the wreckage and repair the railway. The public is asked to avoid the area and not to attempt to approach the site. Your cooperation is appreciated and will result in the wreckage being cleaned up and the roadway and railway being restored sooner. Heavy truck traffic in the area will be present in the coming days, and caution should be taken on nearby roadways. The Pleasantville Emergency Services Department, Marion County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, Marion County Road Department, Pleasantville Police Department, and Marion County Emergency Management all responded to the derailment.
