Richard “Rich” William Bailey

May 21, 2026

Richard “Rich” William Bailey, 78, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, leaving
behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, and love shared with those fortunate enough to
know him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Rich was born on August 18, 1947, in Long Beach to Dean Bailey and Glennis (Dahlke)
Bailey. As a young man, his family eventually made their way to Iowa, where he
graduated from Perry High School with the Class of 1966. Not long after graduation,
Rich answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force during
the Vietnam era.
Rich proudly dedicated more than 20 years of his life to military service. During his
years in the Air Force, he was stationed in Guam, Germany, and Cheyenne, Wyoming,
experiences that shaped his strong character and gave him many stories to tell over the
years. He retired honorably from the military after a career marked by dedication,
discipline, and pride in serving his country. While in the Air Force he met Judy Marquart,
they were married in 1977 and were blessed with two children: Heather and Tim.
During his military career, Rich enjoyed working in ways that allowed him to serve and
connect with others. His sense of humor and easygoing personality made him someone
people naturally enjoyed being around. Rich had a gift for making others laugh. Whether
through a quick joke, a playful comment, or simply his presence, he had a way of
lightening the mood and making people feel comfortable.
Rich enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He loved sports and especially enjoyed attending
sprint car races. Over time, racing became more than just entertainment—it became a
passion he captured through photography. Rich developed a true talent behind the
camera, taking incredible photos of Sprint Cars at the races he loved so much. His
photography also became personal and meaningful when he proudly captured his
grandson’s graduation photos, preserving special moments his family will always
treasure.
In 2014, Rich moved to Knoxville, where he later married Anita Rheinschmidt in 2018.
Together they shared companionship, laughter, and love during the years they built
together. Rich deeply valued family and enjoyed spending time with those he loved
most.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Anita Bailey; his children, Heather
Bailey and Tim Bailey; grandson, Anthony; stepchildren: Steven Rheinschmidt, Kathy
Rheinschmidt, Caren (Craig) Krauss, and Jason Rheinschmidt; his brother, Dan Martin;
sister, Shelley Peterson; along with many extended family members and friends who will
miss his humor, kindness, and the joy he brought into their lives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, who passed away in 2013.
Rich will be remembered for his faithful service to his country, his love of racing and
photography, and most of all for the laughter and warmth he shared so freely with
others.
